A telecom project in South America faces a common challenge. The network needs to reach 16 different users from one distribution point. The box must handle splicing, splitting, and cable management. It must also survive outdoor weather conditions. If the box is too small, the internal fibers get tangled. If the seal is weak, water gets inside and damages the connections. We are currently running a production batch of our FTB-16I-2 fiber distribution boxes for a customer in South America. This box solves these exact problems. It combines a compact size with a double-page internal design and an IP65 rating. Let me show you how we build it and why it fits this project.
We are manufacturing the FTB-16I-2 fiber distribution box for a South American telecom project. This box connects drop cables to feeder cables and serves up to 16 users. It uses high-grade ABS or PC+ABS material, carries an IP65 protection rating, and features a double-page design that separates splicing from termination. It supports up to two 1x8 PLC splitters for flexible signal distribution.
Our customer in South America is building out an FTTH network in a region with mixed indoor and outdoor installation points. Some boxes will go on building walls. Others will mount on poles in the street. The customer needed a single model that could handle both. They also needed a box that technicians could open and maintain easily. The FTB-16I-2 matched their requirements. The production line is running now. Here is what goes into every unit.
The first thing a project engineer checks is the technical data sheet. The specifications tell you if the box fits the network design. They also tell you if the box can survive the installation environment. The FTB-16I-2 is designed for FTTH networks where one box serves a small group of users. The numbers below show why it works for this South American project.
The FTB-16I-2 has a capacity of 16 cores and an IP65 protection level. It is made from ABS or PC+ABS material and comes in black or grey white. The dimensions are 320 x 262 x 92 mm. It has 2 inlet ports with mechanical seals for cables from 6 to 11 mm, and 16 outlet ports for 2x3 mm drop cables.

The table below summarizes the main technical parameters. These values come directly from our product specification sheet.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Model No. | FTB-16I-2 |
| Color | Black, Grey White |
| Capacity | 16 cores |

The 16-core capacity means the box can handle the splicing and distribution for up to 16 users. The 2 inlet ports accept feeder cables with mechanical seals. The 16 outlet ports are sized for standard 2x3 mm drop cables.
The customer needed a box that could work in different locations. The IP65 rating means the box is dust-tight and protected against water jets. This is important for outdoor pole mounting. The ABS and PC+ABS material gives the box good mechanical strength. It resists impact and aging under sunlight. The compact dimensions of 320 x 262 x 92 mm make it easy to mount on a wall or a pole without taking up too much space. The table below shows how these specs match the project needs.
| Project Need | FTB-16I-2 Feature |
|---|---|
| Serve 16 users per point | 16-core capacity |
| Outdoor installation | IP65 protection |
| Wall or pole mounting | Compact size, mounting kit options |

A fiber distribution box holds many small parts. There are splices, splitters, adapters, and excess fiber. If all of these sit in one crowded space, the technician has a hard time working. A wire can get pinched. A splice can get bumped. The double-page design solves this by separating the functions into two layers. The splicing work happens on one page. The termination and distribution happen on the other.
The FTB-16I-2 uses a double-page design. This design keeps fusion splicing and termination completely separated. The technician can install and maintain the box easily because the two functions do not interfere with each other.

The box opens like a book. The inner page holds the splice trays and the fiber routing area. The outer page holds the adapter panel and the drop cable connections. When the technician needs to work on the splices, he opens the inner page. The termination side stays closed and protected. When he needs to connect drop cables, he works on the outer page. The table below shows what goes on each page.
| Page | Function | Components |
|---|---|---|
| Inner page | Splicing and fiber storage | Splice trays, bare fiber tubes, excess fiber routing |
| Outer page | Termination and distribution | Adapter panel, drop cable ports, splitter modules |
This separation saves time. The technician does not have to move splices out of the way to reach the adapters. He does not risk damaging a splice while connecting a drop cable.
The drop leaf is designed to hold two 1x8 module-type PLC splitters. This gives the box flexible signal distribution. One splitter can serve 8 users. Two splitters can serve 16 users. The table below shows the splitter configuration.
| Splitter Type | Quantity | Users Served |
|---|---|---|
| 1x8 PLC module | 1 | 8 users |
| 1x8 PLC module | 2 | 16 users |
The customer in South America plans to use this box with two splitters in some locations and no splitters in others. The design allows both configurations without changing the box.
Water is the enemy of fiber connections. A small leak can let moisture inside the box. Moisture causes condensation. Condensation damages the fiber end faces. The signal loss increases. The network fails. For an outdoor FTTH box, the seal is not a small detail. It is the most important feature. The FTB-16I-2 uses multiple sealing methods to keep water out.
The FTB-16I-2 carries an IP65 protection rating. The inlet ports use mechanical seals for cables from 6 to 11 mm. The drop cable outlets use independent rubber sealing plugs. The box also has a safe special-shaped lock that closes easily and maintains good waterproof performance.
The two inlet ports accept feeder cables. The cable diameter can range from 6 to 11 mm. The mechanical seal compresses around the cable when the fitting is tightened. This creates a watertight connection. The technician must tighten the seal properly. If the seal is loose, water can enter. If the seal is too tight, the cable jacket can deform. Our production team assembles the inlet seals at the factory and checks the fit. The table below shows the inlet sealing details.
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Inlet ports | 2 |
| Cable diameter range | 6 to 11 mm |
| Sealing method | Mechanical seal |
| Factory check | Fit and tightness verified |
The 16 outlet ports are for 2x3 mm drop cables. Each port has an independent rubber sealing plug. When the technician pushes the drop cable through the plug, the rubber closes around the cable jacket. This keeps water out even if one port is not used. The table below shows the outlet sealing details.
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Outlet ports | 16 |
| Cable size | 2 x 3 mm |
| Sealing method | Independent rubber sealing plugs |
| Benefit | Each port seals separately |
The special-shaped lock also plays a role in waterproofing. The lock pulls the two halves of the box together evenly. This compresses the main gasket around the lid. If the lock is loose, the gasket does not seal. Our factory checks the lock action on every box before packing.
A box without accessories is an incomplete product. The installer needs small parts to finish the job. If these parts are missing, the installation stops. The technician has to order them separately or find a local substitute. The FTB-16I-2 ships with a full set of standard accessories. The customer can also order an optional pole-mounting kit.
Every FTB-16I-2 box includes standard accessories: a self-sealing bag, a bare fiber protective tube, 16 splicing protective tubes, 10 nylon cable ties, a zinc alloy key, and a wall-mounting kit with self-tapping screws and plastic expansion anchors. An optional pole-mounting kit with two pole mounting hoops is also available.

The table below lists the standard accessories and their quantities.

The pole mounting hoops clamp around the pole. The box hangs on the hoops using the mounting points on the back. This kit is ordered separately based on the project needs.
The box is ready. The accessories are inside. Now it has to travel to South America. The packaging must protect the box from impact, dust, and moisture during the journey. It must also be efficient for warehouse storage and transport. We use a two-level carton system. Each box gets its own inner carton. Ten inner cartons go into one outer carton.
We pack each FTB-16I-2 in an inner carton measuring 330 x 275 x 105 mm. Ten pieces go into one outer carton measuring 505 x 345 x 565 mm. The total weight of each outer carton is 15 kg. This packaging protects the boxes during sea freight and supports efficient warehouse handling.
The table below shows the packaging specifications.
| Packing Level | Dimensions | Quantity | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product size | 320 x 262 x 92 mm | 1 piece | - |
| Inner carton | 330 x 275 x 105 mm | 1 piece | - |
| Outer carton | 505 x 345 x 565 mm | 10 pieces | 15 kg |
The inner carton holds one box. It protects the box from scratches and minor impacts. The outer carton holds ten inner cartons. It provides structural strength for stacking. The 15 kg weight is manageable for manual handling at the port and in the warehouse.
Before the boxes go into the cartons, we do a final check. The table below shows the inspection items.
